Jacques Leonard

Jacques Léonard (1909, Paris – 1995 L’Escala) was a French photographer. He was born in 1909 at Maisons-Lafitte, very close to Paris, and died in 1995 in L’Escala (Baix Empordà). He carried out different offices, but from his early days, his professional activity was linked to the world of the image, specifically cinema. In the early 50s of the last century, he settled in Barcelona as a photographer.
Married to Rosario, a gypsy woman from the barracks of Montjuïc, he was able to photograph the gypsy community of Barcelona from within. About 3,000 negatives remain from this domestic activity, from the early fifties to mid-seventies of the last century, which possibly constitute the most important photographic background on gypsy culture in Barcelona in the twentieth century.
